In 2016, Kevin Rojas was pulled over by an off-duty cop, who had his son in the car, because Rojas was driving erratically. After Rojas pulled over, he began firing a handgun at the officer and his son. As a result, the officer was hit three times, though his son was not hurt.
The Florida Times-Union reported the officer survived being hit in the face and continued to shoot back at Rojas, who ran away and was later apprehended.
On Wednesday, the 21-year-old shooter was sentenced to life in prison for attempted first-degree murder, attempted manslaughter, two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft auto and fleeing. The officer, who works undercover, was present at Rojas's hearing and brought something along to taunt him.
Brandishing a tube of K-Y Jelly, a personal lubricant, the officer told Rojas, “You are going to need a lot of this."
During the hearing, the officer, who is also an Army veteran, blasted Rojas for running away after starting a fight.
“I will take those bullets instead of a fellow officer and an innocent bystander,” he said. “When I brought the fight back to you, you ran like a coward.”
Rojas will be eligible for parole 25 years into his sentence, per WJXT.
