While on a five-day trip to the Middle East, Defense Secretary Gen. James Mattis had a variety of serious meetings aimed at reaffirming America's partnerships and protecting our national security.
His tour started off in Egypt, where he met with Minister of Defense Gen. Sedki Sobhi and continued to Jordan and Kuwait before his final stop in Pakistan.
In Pakistan, the defense secretary met with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in Islamabad, where Mattis repeatedly told reporters he'd seek to find “common ground” to establish a basis for a partnership against terrorism.
The defense secretary also took some time out of his day to promote a U.S. Marine sergeant to staff sergeant.

While the Marine was surely surprised at the man promoting him, it wasn't the only surprise of the trip — and Mattis himself received quite the pleasant one. The U.S. Department of Defense tweeted a photo and wrote that Mattis saw “a familiar face” on the trip.
The man happened to be a Pakistani employee who, years ago, worked as Mattis's driver. Despite being one of the most powerful men in the U.S. and facing critically serious meetings, the simple reunion was enough to bring a smile to “Mad Dog” Mattis's face.
