Former Vice President Joe Biden joined ABC's “The View” on Wednesday, and the conversation quickly turned to his son Beau and his battle with brain cancer. The discussion struck a chord with regular host Meghan McCain, whose father was diagnosed with glioblastoma several months ago.

Biden was quick to console the daughter of his longtime friend, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), saying, “If anybody can make it, your dad can.”

That same day, however, McCain's office released a statement announcing that the senator had been hospitalized:

Senator McCain is currently receiving treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center for normal side effects of his ongoing cancer therapy. As ever, he remains grateful to his physicians for their excellent care, and his friends and supporters for their encouragement and good wishes. Senator McCain looks forward to returning to work as soon as possible.

But McCain, who has often been at odds with President Donald Trump over both policy and personal issues, received what may have been a surprise phone call on Friday.

The Associated Press reported:

President Donald Trump has called the wife of John McCain as the Arizona senator is hospitalized for cancer treatments.

The White House said Trump called Cindy McCain on Friday to send his best wishes and check on her and her husband.

McCain's office has said that the senator is expected to return to the Senate floor in time to vote on the tax cut package, hopefully before Congress breaks for Christmas.
