Roland panel 10-31

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly lit fire to the remnants of his reputation Monday night when he not only stood by the 20 lies he told in defense of Donald Trump's despicable treatment of slain Green Beret Sgt. La David Johnson and his loved ones, but went on to praise Confederate general and white supremacist slave-torturer Robert E. Lee as an “honorable man.”

On Tuesday morning, “NewsOne Now” host Roland Martin and his panel took Kelly apart bit by bit in a segment that vividly demonstrated the degree to which Trump and his administration are viewed outside even the most critical “mainstream” news outlets. While White House reporters were afraid to call Kelly out to his face, Martin and panel pulled no punches.

Martin began by noting that Kelly “clearly [...] has not read a history book” and set him straight about the assertion that the Civil War was caused by a failure to “compromise”:

In remarks you definitely wouldn't hear on CNN, union organizer Tiffany Dena Loftin called Kelly “dirty and disgusting” for his comments, and strategist Avis Jones-DeWeever counted him among the “white supremacists” who remain in the Trump White House:

“When the congresswoman said that that White House is full of white supremacists, I would argue that she is exactly right. When they got rid of Bannon, and when they got rid of Gorka, they still left a couple over there. Several over there. And I would say that he is part of that crew. Clearly, this is the great example of that. He lied. He baldface lied. With great detail, with great fervency, with great passion, he lied. And he refuses to apologize, and at the same time, he's holding up this general, who, in fact, was leading a revolution against this country! OK, this was a traitor that he's sitting here, holding up as a hero. So anytime anyone wants to talk about this general as being something that somehow the protecting the country from this president, let me — no, he's not.”

Martin then read some more of the first-person account of a former Lee slave that we posted earlier and importantly called out Laura Ingraham for “sitting there like a bump on a log” instead of pushing back on Kelly's lies:

Even the Republican on the panel, strategist Shermichael Singleton, was completely through with Kelly:

“I think we recognize Kelly for his service, but, you know, time and time again, you see people in this administration who lose all credibility, people who were once respected, but they recognize the president's watching. And you have seen people who, by and large, have been supported, have been praised, even glorified for their past, whatever it was that they were doing prior to coming into the administration, and now all of a sudden, they say statements that are antithetical to what we believe. I can't imagine any person making a logical case for defending Robert E. Lee. I mean, there is nothing about what this guy did, he was a traitor to this country, everything he believed in was against what we purport to believe today, what the founding documents say that we are to uphold as a nation.”

This White House continues to sink lower every day. At Tuesday's White House briefing, Sarah Huckabee Sanders could not even bring herself to denounce Confederate general and early leader of racist terror group the Ku Klux Klan, Nathan Bedford Forrest, yet so much of the media continues to sit around politely insisting that there really are two sides for us all to consider.

We need more folks who are willing to take the full measure of the degradation that is occurring.
