Warren 11-2

It seems like no matter whatever happens in the world, there is always the time and the will to blame Hillary Clinton for something. On Thursday, it was the “rigging” of the 2016 Democratic presidential primary and not just the adorable conspiracy theory that Berners have been flogging for a year.

No, this time, there's supposed to be some kind of “proof,” and whatever it is, it's enough to convince Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) to declare for good and all that yes, Hillary Clinton rigged the primaries:

TAPPER: Do you agree with the notion that the DNC was rigged in Hillary Clinton's favor?

Warren, you may recall, angered a lot of self-styled progressives when she refused to back Bernie Sanders during the 2016 primaries, perhaps in hopes of ticketing up with Hillary. Since that didn't work out, now she's decided to feed the delusions of the Berners by hopping on this bandwagon.

The entire basis for this “rigging” claim is an excerpt from former acting DNC Chair Donna Brazile, in which she claims she has “solid proof” that Hillary and the DNC “rigged” the primaries against Bernie. But what she actually describes is a DNC that would have fallen apart without Hillary Clinton coming in to rescue it. Don't take my word for it, read it. I'll wait. It's too much to blockquote.

Now, I can understand why Democrats and donors wouldn't be happy to learn any of this, but I fail to see how any of it constitutes “rigging.” And come to think of it, neither does Donna Brazile (emphasis added):

I had tried to search out any other evidence of internal corruption that would show that the DNC was rigging the system to throw the primary to Hillary, but I could not find any in party affairs or among the staff. I had gone department by department, investigating individual conduct for evidence of skewed decisions, and I was happy to see that I had found none. Then I found this agreement.

The funding arrangement with HFA and the victory fund agreement was not illegal, but it sure looked unethical. If the fight had been fair, one campaign would not have control of the party before the voters had decided which one they wanted to lead. This was not a criminal act, but as I saw it, it compromised the party’s integrity.

Yeah, but without the funding agreement, by Brazile's own reckoning, there would have been no DNC to “rig.” They were deep in debt and burning money faster than they could raise it. And even with that, Brazile herself says she could find no evidence of decisions to disfavor Bernie.

Maybe Elizabeth Warren didn't read the thing carefully enough, or maybe she's got one eye on a 2020 run, and the other on a pot of $27 donations. What she'll get, though, is the tens of millions of pissed off Democrats she's betrayed.
