Tim Tebow Reveals Harrowing Birth Story After Doctors Encouraged Abortion: ‘They Said I Was a Tumor’

Former NFL star Tim Tebow recently opened up about his harrowing birth story and discussed how it shaped his stance on abortion.

Speaking at the Passion 2018 conference, Tebow, who was born in the Philippines, explained his “special birth story” to Pastor Louie Giglio, founder of the annual college conference.

“The doctors said that I wasn’t even a baby; they said I was a tumor,” Tebow said in early January, according to Faithwire, noting his siblings would often jokingly call him “Timmy the tumor.”

Despite being encouraged to undergo an abortion, Tebow said his mother — a missionary — decided to go on with the pregnancy, even after doctors urged her not to. Thankfully, she did, because their diagnoses were wrong.

“There was a lot of craziness with my mom’s pregnancy. She decided to trust God and not what the doctors were saying,” Tebow told Giglio. “And then I was born, and it was a miracle — the placenta wasn’t attached the entire pregnancy … I was malnourished, but I made up for it pretty quickly.”

Tebow also talked with the pastor about his decision to put John 3:16 on his eye black ahead of the 2009 BCS National Championship. He said he felt God prompting him to switch the Scripture passage from Philippians 4:13, but he didn’t know why.

He found out during a dinner after the game.

“Coach [Urban] Meyer gets a call. … And I was like, ‘Coach, what’s that all about?’” Tebow recalled. “He said, ‘That’s Steve McClain,’ who’s our PR guy at Florida. I said, ‘Well, what’d he have to say?’ [Meyer] said, ‘Tim, he just told me that during the game, 94 million people Googled ‘John 3:16.’”

Tebow said he was immediately “humbled at how big the God we serve really is.”

“You never know what God can do with something when you just step out with a little courage or a little boldness,” he said. “And it doesn’t mean you need to be crazy. It just means you need to be a little different.”
