Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) is defending herself from “vile attacks” spewed by Republicans, arguing that her comments on the Palestinian response to the Holocaust are being taken severely “out of context.”
During an interview on with a Yahoo podcast titled “Skullduggery” last Friday, Tlaib stated that it gives her a “calming feeling” when she thinks about what resulted from the Holocaust’s genocide because her Palestinian ancestors helped “to create a safe haven for Jews” in the Middle East.
Read Tlaib’s statement below (emphasis added):
“There’s, you know, there’s kind of a calming feeling I tell folks when I think of the Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports and just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews.”
However, in attempt to further their branding of Tlaib as an anti-Semite, Republicans have been cropping the congresswoman’s comment to solely reflect the first part of the statement, promoting that the Holocaust gives her a “calming feeling,” without including the full context. As IJR Red reported, she took major heat.
This includes Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) who, on Saturday, called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Rep. Steve Hoyer (D-Md.) to “finally take action against vile anti-Semitism in their ranks,” adding that “this must cross the line, even for them.”
Surely now @SpeakerPelosi & @LeaderHoyer will finally take action against vile anti-Semitism in their ranks. This must cross the line, even for them. Rashida Tlaib says thinking of the Holocaust provides her a “calming feeling” https://t.co/opUUNEol2d

In response to Cheney’s “attack” on Tlaib, the Michigan congresswoman released a statement condemning “Republican lies” while explaining how the discussion “of her ancestors [being] involved in helping those tragically impacted in the Holocaust” has been misconstrued by the GOP.

“Once again, Republican leaders and right-wing extremists are spreading outright lies to incite hate,” the statement reads. “Congresswoman Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself for using the tragedy of the Holocaust in a transparent attempt to score political points.”
The statement went on to emphasize that “this behavior by a bankrupt Republican leadership is dangerous and only increases hateful rhetoric to those who want to cause harm to oppressed people.”
“The Republican Party has reached a new low,” it concludes.
On Monday, President Donald Trump unsurprisingly decided to join in on the bashing of congresswoman Tlaib.
Democrat Rep. Tlaib is being slammed for her horrible and highly insensitive statement on the Holocaust. She obviously has tremendous hatred of Israel and the Jewish people. Can you imagine what would happen if I ever said what she said, and says?

“Democrat Rep. Tlaib is being slammed for her horrible and highly insensitive statement on the Holocaust,” Trump tweeted on Monday. “She obviously has tremendous hatred of Israel and the Jewish people.”
However, over the weekend, Tlaib let it be known that she’s not backing down to Republicans who are twisting her narrative to “ignite vile attacks” warning them that they will “fail miserably.”
Policing my words, twisting & turning them to ignite vile attacks on me will not work. All of you who are trying to silence me will fail miserably. I will never allow you to take my words out of context to push your racist and hateful agenda. The truth will always win.

“Policing my words, twisting & turning them to ignite vile attacks on me will not work,” the congresswoman tweeted on Sunday. “All of you who are trying to silence me will fail miserably.”
“I will never allow you to take my words out of context to push your racist and hateful agenda,” she insisted, affirming that “the truth will always win.”
