President Donald Trump on Tuesday joked that freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez‘s (D-N.Y.) Green New Deal would help him win re-election in 2020, proclaiming that he “deserved to lose” if his 2020 opponent beat him with a platform around the resolution.
While speaking at a fundraising dinner for the National Republican Congressional Committee, Trump poked fun at the “young bartender’s” signature nonbinding resolution, joking that he thought it was “the craziest thing” when he first heard about it.
The president also took shots at the “senators” who were “standing behind” Ocasio-Cortez and “shaking” out of fear toward the New York firebrand:
“The Green New Deal, done by a young bartender, 29 years old. A young bartender, wonderful young woman. The Green New Deal. It’s crazy, you know, the first time I heard it, I said, ‘That’s the craziest thing.’
You have senators that are professionals that, you guys know, that have been there for a long time. White hair, everything perfect. And they’re standing behind her, and they’re shaking. They’re petrified of her.”

He went on to blast Democrats as “really believ[ing] this stuff” and asked that the Green New Deal not be taken down “too early” because they “want to be able to run against it” in the 2020 election.
Trump then delivered the line of the night.
“If they beat me with the Green New Deal, I deserve to lose,” he said.

Ocasio-Cortez’s nonbinding environmental resolution was brought up for a vote in the Senate last month. Fifty-seven senators voted “no” on the measure, while 43 senators voted “present.”
Every Democratic senator — sans Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.), and Doug Jones (D-Ala.) — voted “present” on the resolution. Additionally, Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), who caucuses with Democrats, also voted “present.”
Ocasio-Cortez was not too keen on the political screen pass from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), calling the Senate vote on her nonbinding resolution last month “a disgrace,” as IJR Red previously reported.
