On Saturday, President Donald Trump applauded comments from a former New York Times executive editor who gave credence to his claims that the paper biased its coverage toward him.

His tweet came after a review surfaced for Jill Abramson, who served as the Times’ first and only executive editor before her ouster in 2014.

According to Fox News‘ Howard Kurtz, her new book, “Merchants of Truth,” had some sharp criticism of her former employer.

“Though [current New York Times executive editor Dean] Baquet said publicly he didn’t want the Times to be the opposition party,” she said of her successor, “his news pages were unmistakably anti-Trump.”

Trump touted the news, claiming that “Ms. Abramson is 100% correct.”

“Horrible and totally dishonest reporting on almost everything they write. Hence the term Fake News, Enemy of the People, and Opposition Party!” he added.

But according to Abramson, Fox News took her criticism “totally out of context,” the Associated Press reported.

“His article is an attempt to Foxify my book, which is full of praise for The Times and The Washington Post and their coverage of Trump,” she said of Kurtz. Abramson noted that her book heaped praise on her former employer.

Kurtz defended his coverage.

“I would have written this story the same way if I were working for any news organization,” he told the AP. “Her sometimes harsh criticism of her former paper’s Trump coverage leaps off the page and is clearly the most newsworthy element in the book because of her standing as a former executive editor.”

Regardless, Trump has long referred to the Times as the “Failing New York Times” and has repeatedly criticized its coverage of his administration.

As IJR previously reported, Trump had some especially pointed criticism for one of the Times’ top reporters, Maggie Haberman.

“The New York Times and a third rate reporter named Maggie Haberman, known as a Crooked H flunkie who I don’t speak to and having nothing to do with, are going out of their way to destroy Michael Cohen and his relationship with me in the hope that he will ‘flip,'” Trump wrote at the time of his former attorney.

As IJR has previously reported, Cohen eventually turned on the president and pleaded guilty to multiple campaign finance violations implicating the president.

Just how deep has our society sunk when a card carrying lefty, a NYT executive editor no less, years later acknowledges what’s always been obvious, and it’s news not “ to print”? Then when Fox chimes in, there’s a backpeddle? Then the Grey Lady has to censure one of their own for telling the truth? Then the article plows, wandering all around, the M. Cohen patch yet again. Missed that point unless it was included just to appeal to blueys

“What do I think?” I think it is awfully nice of Howard Kurtz to attempt to sell books for Jill. “Merchants of Truth” is available for pre-order, but not released until Feb. 5th. So, we have to wait a month before we can fact check whose version of the book is accurate.
