Trump Argues the Russia Investigation Is Hurting the US Government

During a press conference on Wednesday, President Donald Trump continued deriding the Russia investigation as a “Democrat hoax” and claimed it “hurt” the United States government.

“For 11 months, they’ve had this phony cloud over this administration, over our government, and it has hurt our government. It does hurt our government,” Trump said, referring to the investigation into his alleged ties to Russia.

Trump denied any collusion on his campaign’s part but instead accused Democrats of colluding with Russia.

“I will say this, there is collusion, but it’s really with the Democrats and the Russians, far more than it is with the Republicans and the Russians,” he said.

“The witch hunt continues.”

His comments came amid news that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation was moving at a fast pace and sought an interview with Trump.

Although Trump didn’t directly answer Fox News reporter John Roberts’ question about whether he would agree to an interview, a source told The Washington Post that he was open to the idea.

Trump, who has repeatedly denied any collusion, reportedly thought an interview would relieve concerns his campaign colluded with Russia.

During his press conference, Trump reiterated his claim that Democrats fabricated the Russia controversy to distract from their loss to him in 2016.

“It’s a Democrat hoax that was brought up as an excuse for losing an election that, frankly, the Democrats should have won because they have such a tremendous advantage in the Electoral College,” he said.

Trump also claimed that “virtually everybody” determined he didn’t collude with the Russians.

While it’s unclear who he was referring to, congressional Democrats have repeatedly raised concerns about Trump and his associates’ behavior.

Norway Prime Minister Erna Solberg, who appeared with Trump at the joint press conference, seemed to back away from a question about whether she was “laughing at the Russia investigation.”

“I think that it’s up to every political system in countries to scrutinize and discuss their own political agenda in their countries. And I respect that very much,” she said.
