Trump Asks Supporters to Sign Petition Stating That They Stand for National Anthem

Amid controversy surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, President Donald Trump launched a petition which provides supporters the opportunity to declare they stand for the national anthem.

“The President has asked for a list of supporters who stand for the National Anthem,” the petition reads on the president’s website. “Add your name below to show your patriotism and support.”

The president’s petition came just days after statements from the NFL, which never indicated it told its players to stand during the national anthem at games.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NFL and NFL Players Association claimed that the “everyone who is part of our NFL community has a tremendous respect for our country, our flag, our anthem and our military”:

On the following day, Trump tweeted that the NFL disrespected the country by refusing to force its players to stand:

Despite that tweet, NLF Commissioner Roger Goodell did not commit, during a press briefing that same day, to forcing his players to stand.
