President Donald Trump started his Wednesday by criticizing the bishop who presided over the National Cathedral prayer service the day before, calling her “nasty.”
Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde presided over the service in which she asked Trump to be kind to transgender children and immigrant families, The Hill reported.
Trump posted on Truth Social and X and said Budde was “not compelling or smart.”
“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart,” Trump wrote.
“She failed to mention the large number of illegal migrants that came into our Country and killed people. Many were deposited from jails and mental institutions,” he added. “It is a giant crime wave that is taking place in the USA. Apart from her inappropriate statements, the service was a very boring and uninspiring one.”
He then said she owes an apology to the public.
“She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!” he ended the post.
During her sermon on Tuesday, Budde beseeched Trump to have mercy on a litany of people, including “gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families.”
“I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared. There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families — some who fear for their lives,” she said.
“The people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings, who labor in poultry farms and meatpacking plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals — they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” Budde added.
She also listed the virtues of those listed — migrant workers pay taxes and are members of churches, mosques, synagogues and temples in the U.S.
She added their children “fear their parents are going to be taken away.”
And, she called on Trump to aid people fleeing war zones and persecution.
Needless to say, Trump was not impressed.
After returning to the White House after the service Trump said it “wasn’t too exciting.”
“They can do much better,” he said.
Trump was not alone in being critical of Budde.
Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.) wrote on X “the person giving this sermon should be added to the deportation list.”
