Trump Calls on Justice Department to Investigate James Comey, Huma Abedin, Others in Morning Tweet

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump appeared to call on his Justice Department to investigate former FBI director James Comey:

“Deep State Justice Dept must finally act? Also on Comey & others,” Trump said after taking aim at longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

Abedin, Trump suggested, deserved jail time for “disregarding basic security protocols” while serving in the State Department under former President Barack Obama. “She put Classified Passwords into the hands of foreign agents. Remember sailors pictures on submarine? Jail!” he said.

Last week, the State Department released thousands of Abedin’s emails found on her embattled ex-husband Anthony Weiner’s laptop. Abedin, according to Comey, regularly forwarded emails to Weiner so he could print them for her.

Investigators looked into Weiner’s cyber activity after he allegedly “sexted” an underage girl.

Although Comey testified that Abedin didn’t seem to realize she violated the law by sending her husband classified material, the newly released emails revealed that at least four were marked “classified.”

Tuesday’s tweet came amid concern over the way Trump directed his Justice Department and even claims he obstructed justice by firing Comey in May.

It’s unclear why Trump took aim at Comey on Tuesday, but the former FBI director appeared to knock the president on New Year’s Eve when he tweeted he hoped 2018 would bring “more ethical leadership”:

“Here’s hoping 2018 brings more ethical leadership, focused on the truth and lasting values,” Comey said.
