President Donald Trump is known for his disdain toward the press, often lashing out at critical coverage and stories he finds misleading or untrue. However, Trump escalated his beef with the media even further, labeling certain outlets and publications as “the enemy of the American People.”
Without signaling any specific provocation, Trump wrote on Twitter Friday afternoon:
“The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @CNN, @NBCNews and many more) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American people. SICK!”
Moments later, the newly-minted commander-in-chief deleted the tweet, only to tweet it once again but with more news outlets listed.

His characterization of a free press as a public enemy drew fierce criticism online.
The press is the only institution holding President Trump accountable on a daily basis and that's exactly why he's trying to destroy it. https://t.co/0jdoTFEtDX
