The last time a Republican presidential candidate won in Minnesota was former President Richard Nixon in 1972. Minnesota was the only state in the union to not vote for former President Ronald Reagan 1984. Instead, they backed Walter Mondale, who was from the state.
Although Republicans have had an uphill battle in the state, Trump came close to defeating then-candidate Hillary Clinton, only losing the state by just 1.5% or around 44,000 votes.
He believes that Omar could be the edge he needs to win the state. In a tweet posted Tuesday morning, Trump wrote, “In 2016 I almost won Minnesota. In 2020, because of America hating anti-Semite Rep. Omar, [and] the fact that Minnesota is having its best economic year ever, I will win the State!”
In 2016 I almost won Minnesota. In 2020, because of America hating anti-Semite Rep. Omar, & the fact that Minnesota is having its best economic year ever, I will win the State! “We are going to be a nightmare to the President,” she say. No, AOC Plus 3 are a Nightmare for America!

Trump referenced Omar’s continued controversy surrounding comments she made that were considered by many to be anti-Semitic. She accused those in Congress who support Israel of having duel loyalty, as well as claiming that support for the Jewish state is “all about the Benjamins.”
Both of these claims would fall under the criteria of an anti-Semitic remark, as defined by the State Department.
Trump also tied Omar to her so-called “squad” of Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.).
The president recently landed in hot water for his comments that called for members of Congress to “go back” to other counties. The tweet clearly referenced the “squad,” but only Omar was born outside the United States, leaving many to claim Trump’s remark was racist.
Still, Trump and members of his administration have made it clear they will not lay off the freshmen congresswomen, with Counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway claiming they must be countered.
