Trump Clarifies Immigration, DACA Deal: ‘It’s Got to Include the Wall’

President Donald Trump attempted to clarify Wednesday whether or not he would sign a potential deal allowing the thousands of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program receipts to remain in the United States without funding for a border wall.

“No. No. No,” the president said when asked if he’d sign the bill without the wall, a signature promise from his campaign. “It’s got to include the wall.”

Trump made it clear during a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg at the White Hosue that the wall must be included in an immigration deal if he’s to sign, arguing that the country needs a “wall for security” and “safety.”

“I really believe they are going to come up with a solution to the DACA problem,” Trump added. “But any solution has to include the wall because without the wall, it all doesn’t work.”

The president’s more direct comments on Wednesday come a day after Trump held a sprawling, nearly hour-long bipartisan meeting on immigration at the White House on Tuesday — where he offered seemingly conflicting messages regarding what he needed from lawmakers out of an immigration bill.

On the one hand, Trump appeared to jump at the idea of first passing a “clean” DACA bill and then addressing comprehensive immigration reform, which Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) suggested to the president during Tuesday’s meeting.

“I have no problem with that,” Trump said. “We’re going to come out with DACA, and then we can start immediately on the phase two, which would be comprehensive.”

However, after the meeting concluded, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that the leadership team gathered in that meeting instead agreed to first address four key aspects to immigration followed by a more comprehensive overhaul.
