In a surprising twist few saw coming, President Donald Trump and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz held a call Monday that both camps called “productive.” That’s not the usual tone when these two leaders are mentioned in the same sentence.

The call followed weeks of rising tension after two fatal shootings by federal agents in Minnesota, including the highly controversial killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti. Trump has openly blamed Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey for what he called “pompous, dangerous, and arrogant rhetoric,” saying it fueled unrest and chaos. He even accused them of “inciting insurrection.”

Yet on Monday, Trump posted on Truth Social that Walz had reached out and “requested that we work together.” Trump called the discussion “very good,” noting they “seemed to be on a similar wavelength.”

The shift is more than just political optics—it comes with action. Trump announced he’s dispatching former ICE director Tom Homan to Minnesota. He also told Walz the White House wants state prisons and jails to immediately hand over criminal illegal immigrants in custody to federal authorities. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt backed that up, calling for full state cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

And here’s where things get even more interesting. While Walz’s office described the call as productive and said Trump agreed to ensure state investigators could look into the federal shootings, the tone marked a clear detour from the governor’s earlier rhetoric. Just 24 hours prior, Walz had slammed Trump for allegedly seeking “fear, violence and chaos.”

We don’t know what Trump said to Walz, but look what happened when rioters tried to attack a hotel again.

Reports from the ground show law enforcement was ready. Federal agents coordinated swiftly with local police. The crowd scattered. The chaos was stopped cold. There was no repeat of the fiery summer scenes from years past.

BREAKING MINNEAPOLIS!

Should Trump and Walz continue collaborating on issues of federal and state law enforcement?

That’s the kind of outcome that speaks louder than any press statement.

And while Walz doubled down in a Wall Street Journal op-ed defending Minnesota’s cooperation with ICE, the political temperature seems to be shifting. The governor confirmed the state notifies ICE of any non-citizen inmates, claiming there’s “not a single documented case” of non-cooperation.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to questions about the deeper implications of the call, but the impact is already being felt on the streets of Minneapolis.

Whether this sudden alignment between Trump and Walz holds, or if it was simply a tactical pause, remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: The heat is still on in Minnesota—and everyone’s watching what comes next.
