After much debating, the two candidates for president will participate in a debate Sept. 10 on ABC
Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, said during press conference Thursday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida that he has agreed to debate Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic counterpart.
“ABC News will host qualifying presidential candidates to debate on Sept. 10 on ABC. Vice President Harris and former President Trump have both confirmed they will attend the ABC debate,” the network said in a statement.
At his press conference, Trump said he was “looking forward” to debating Harris. He also said he has agreed to upcoming dates with Fox News, ABC and NBC.
“I think it’s very important to have debates, and we’ve agreed with Fox on a date of Sept. 4. We’ve agreed with NBC. Fairly full agreement subject to them on Sept. 10. And we’ve agreed with ABC on Sept. 25,” Trump said.
However, Trump’s dates were not correct.
A senior Trump adviser and an ABC source familiar said Trump has agreed to the following networks and dates: Sept. 4 with Fox News, Sept. 10 with ABC and Sept. 25 with NBC.
Trump said such details as audience and locations are still being ironed out.
“The other side has to agree to the terms. They may or may not agree. I don’t know if they’re going to agree. (Harris) hasn’t done an interview. She can’t do an interview. She’s barely competent, and she can’t do an interview, I look forward to the debates because I think we have to set the record straight,” Trump said.
Harris confirmed her attendance at the Sept. 10 debate Thursday, She said she would be “happy” to discuss a further debate.
“I’m glad that he’s finally agreed to a debate on Sept. 10th. I’m looking forward to it, and I hope he shows up,” Harris said in Detroit after an event with the United Auto Workers.
She added she is open to participating in other debates.
“I’m happy to have that conversation about an additional debate for after Sept. 10th,” Harris said.
Trump and President Joe Biden had agreed on the Sept. 10 debate when Biden was the Democratic candidate.
Earlier this week, Trump balked debating Harris if she did not agree to attend the Fox News debate on Sept. 4 that he proposed.
Harris’ camp has said she will not agree to the Fox News debate.
A source familiar with the NBC negotiations said Sept. 25 was “one of the dates” given to both campaigns. Harris has not formally accepted to be in that debate.
Details on location, rules and moderators have not been released.
