Trump Hints Colbert Is Not the Last to Fall

People hold signs supporting Stephen Colbert outside the Ed Sullivan Theater ahead of the taping of the final episode of the "The Late Show" after 32 years on air, in New York, on May 21, 2026. "The Late Show" frontman Stephen Colbert will host the final edition of the 33-year-old US cultural institution on May 21, after it was cancelled by CBS as the network courted President Donald Trump. The show, which Colbert has hosted since 2015, was axed after he mocked the broadcaster for a $16 million settlement with Trump for allegedly "maliciously" editing an interview with his Democratic election rival Kamala Harris. Now that Stephen Colbert is off the air, President Donald Trump is expecting more to fall.

“Stephen Colbert’s firing from CBS was the ‘Beginning of the End’ for untalented, nasty, highly overpaid, not funny, and very poorly rated Late Night Television Hosts,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Others, of even less talent, to soon follow. May they all Rest in Peace!”

Colbert’s last show from the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York City aired on Thursday. The host stayed away from politics or direct criticism of Trump during the broadcast for the most part.

He was joined by other late-night comedians and satirists, including Jon Stewart,Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, John Oliver and Jimmy Fallon, in the show’s final skit.

During the segment, the group of hosts stood in front of a giant portal that was about to suck Colbert away and joked they, too, may get swept up in it.

Should late-night hosts be concerned about being canceled like Stephen Colbert?

In a separate post overnight, Trump wrote it was “amazing that he lasted so long” and that he had “No talent, no ratings, no life.”

“He was like a dead person. You could take any person off of the street and they would be better than this total jerk. Thank goodness he’s finally gone!” the president wrote.

Colbert’s show was canceled by Paramount, the media conglomerate owned by Trump allies Larry and David Ellison.

The company said “The Late Show” was canceled based on financial considerations, while others said it as an effort to please Trump.

Trump has called for the firing of Kimmel, Meyers and other late-night hosts who poke fun at him or criticize his allies.
