Trump Labels McCabe’s Firing A ‘Great Day for Democracy’

President Donald Trump celebrated the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe by calling it a “great day for Democracy.”

On Friday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced he fired McCabe largely because of Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz’s report. It concluded McCabe “made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.”

McCabe’s firing came just two days before he planned on retiring and the removal before his 50th birthday called into question aspects of his pension.

In a statement, McCabe said he was being “singled out” and Horowitz’s report was accelerated after he testified that he would corroborate former FBI Director James Comey’s “accounts of his discussions with the President.”

Trump has repeatedly criticized McCabe and on Friday, championed his dismissal as a “great day for the hardworking men and women of the FBI.”

He added that it was also a “great day for Democracy” and that Comey made him “look like a choirboy.”

“He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!” Trump tweeted.

During an interview with ABC News, McCabe defended his decision to allow two FBI employees to provide a Wall Street Journal reporter with contents of a conversation he had with a senior official from the Justice Department.

He called it “absolutely” within his authority to share information and while people can disagree with his decision, he declared that “the fact is this is not a leak.”
