President-elect Donald Trump took to social media to call Canadia Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “governor.”
“It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada,” Trump posted on Truth Social early Tuesday morning. “I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all! DJT.”
The two met late last month at Mar-a-Largo where, at one point, the discussion turned to a sweeping tariff Trump is expected to impose on the U.S.’s neighbors to the north once he is back in the Oval Office, IJR reported.
This led Trump to suggest Canada become the 51st state if it could not survive that tariff — a 25% penalty on Canada and Mexico for not curbing the influx of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs from those countries into the U.S.
Tuesday’s post seemed to be in response to a speech Trudeau gave Monday.
Trudeau spoke at a Halifax Chamber of Commerce event and said Americans were “beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive,” per a report in Forbes.
The prime minister said such a steep tariff would be “devastating” for Canada’s economy, but added, “It would also, however, mean real hardship for Americans as well.”
Trudeau said Canada would fight Trump’s “unfair tariffs” as the country did eight years ago when tariffs were imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum during Trump’s first administration.
