People Are Laughing at Trump for Saying the ‘Moon Is a Part’ of Mars, But Here’s What He Really Meant

The president caused a stir on Friday when he, at first glance, appeared to suggest the Moon belongs to Mars — but that’s not exactly what he meant.

Crunching down his words into one tweet, President Donald Trump fired off criticism at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) efforts to return to the Moon, which led some to believe he thinks the Moon is a part of the planet Mars.

In discussing some of NASA’s latest plans, Trump tweeted on Friday that they “should NOT be talking about going to the Moon,” and instead focus on “much bigger thing” such as Mars, which he said “the Moon is a part.”

People on social media were quick to pounce on the president, taking his poorly phrased tweet out of context.

Even the Democratic National Committee (DNC) War Room released a statement to clarify that “the moon is not part of Mars.”

Check out the reactions below:

However, aside from the backlash, others came to the president’s defense to clarify what he actually meant.

However, when Trump said the “the Moon is a part” of Mars, he was likely referring to moon exploration, which is part of NASA’s “Moon to Mars” plan to make a permanent residence on the Moon, with a long-term goal of exploration to Mars.

NASA’s overview of the program reads:

“Exploration of the Moon and Mars is intertwined. The Moon provides an opportunity to test new tools, instruments and equipment that could be used on Mars, including human habitats, life support systems, and technologies and practices that could help us build self-sustaining outposts away from Earth. Living on the Gateway for months at a time will also allow researchers to understand how the human body responds in a true deep space environment before committing to the years-long journey to Mars.”

However, it doesn’t seem as if Trump thinks the Moon should be part of the exploration — despite his past support to go there, as he signed a directive in December of 2017 to return to the Moon for the first time since 1972 for Americans, with a future mission to Mars.

“Under my Administration, we are restoring @NASA to greatness and we are going back to the Moon, then Mars,” Trump also tweeted on May 13, 2019. “I am updating my budget to include an additional $1.6 billion so that we can return to Space in a BIG WAY!”

Just a badly referenced sentence talking about the space program.

The ONLY reason anyone would imagine Trump doesn’t know that the Moon and Mars aren’t the same is because of the way states his point enables them to twist what he say’s. Which happens A LOT! There just sitting there waiting for any opportunity to slam our President! I wished Republican/Conservatives would give equal treatment when the Democrats have elected the POTUS……but…..if we do we are unfortunately labeled with some phobia?? Or we are racists or white supremacists or….well you get it!

The president did not mean the moon and Mars are the same. Most likely meant we should use the Moon as part of a plan to go to Mars. Regardless, the media did not ever parse Obama’s words like the do president Trump’s words. Obama said he wanted to visit all 57 states. Count them, there are only 50. Obama said the Carbon was a pollutant. You cant call an element a pollutant.

This is nothing more than a failure to use common sense. Normally a Democrat problem.

So he meant going to moon as a step of going to Mars, which he dismissed in his first sentence. Which is it? Is it a good idea or not? That interpretation makes no sense either.

Incidentally he was the one that directed NASA to focus on going to the moon. Criticizing others for doing what you told them to do – great leadership.

Trump needs an English professor to help him communicate. Someone should proof read his tweets before he posts them. Quit blaming Democrats because he does not know how to clearly communicate his opinions so everyone can understand. Quit making excuses for a grown man.
