Trump on Puerto Rico: ‘Such Poor Leadership … They Want Everything to Be Done for Them’

In a Saturday morning tweetstorm, President Donald Trump disparaged the leadership of Puerto Rico while lauding his and his administration’s response efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

At 7:19 a.m. ET, President Trump began his rant on Twitter, pointing out the mayor of San Juan, Carmen Yulín Cruz, was once “very complimentary,” but now at the urging of Democrats had changed her tune.

The president went on to state that Cruz, and “others in Puerto Rico,” had demonstrated “such poor leadership ability,” saying the relief efforts needed to be a “community effort”:

Trump’s comments come a day after Cruz held an emotional press conference in which she pleaded for assistance.

“I will do what I never thought I was going to do,” Cruz said. “I am begging, begging anyone who can hear us to save us from dying. If anybody out there is listening to us, we are dying, and you are killing us with the inefficiency.”

Continuing his tweetstorm, the president then pivoted his attention to “fake news” outlets CNN and NBC, saying the networks were going out of their way to “disparage our great First Responders as a way to ‘get Trump'”:

As he stated in his tweet, the president and First Lady Melania Trump will be visiting Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
