Trump Has Solid Response to Claims Shutdown Is Causing ‘Human Pain’: ‘You Know Who Has More Pain?’

Joshua Roberts/Reuters

On Thursday, President Donald Trump clapped back at complaints that he was causing “human pain” by refusing to re-open the government until he received funding for a southern border wall.

When a reporter asked him about that outside of the White House, he pointed right back to the victims of crimes committed by illegal immigrants. “You know who has more human pain?” he asked.

He then decried how parents and families felt so much more pain than furloughed government workers did. “The parents of people who had children killed by an illegal immigrant that should have never been in the country.”

“You know who has more human pain?” he continued. “The husband that lost the wife or the wife that lost the husband to an illegal immigrant that came in five or six times, that shouldn’t be here. That’s the human pain.”

The shutdown has put 800,000 federal employees out of work or left them working without pay. But according to the president, many of the affected employees agreed with Trump’s ardent push for border security.

Watch Trump’s comments below:

“The people that will be paid but maybe a little bit later, those people, many of them, are on my side,” he said. “They want to see border security.”

Trump and Congressional Democrats have effectively made the border wall a debate over morals and human suffering. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), for example, called the border wall “immoral,” a characterization that Trump pounced on and seemed to rebuke with twice as much vigor.

As IJR previously noted, Trump addressed the nation on Tuesday and decried the humanitarian “crisis” created by lax border security. “The only thing that is immoral is the politicians to do nothing and to continue to allow more innocent people to be so horribly victimized,” he said.

Both Trump and angel moms, individuals who lost their children to illegal immigrant crime, had pointed responses to Democrats.

“I want to ask Nancy Pelosi a question,” angel mom Mary Ann Mendoza said last month, “and I hope she hears this: How much would the cost of the wall mean to you, Nancy, if it could be predicted that a loved one of yours would be saved two years from now because that wall was built?”

As Congress and the White House feuded over the border wall, the migration crisis appeared to worsen with thousands coming from Central America. According to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) testimony last month, agents saw a shockingly high number of unlawful entries as the caravan reached the southern border.

While House Democrats have approved spending packages to re-open the government, Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) have refused to approve legislation without border wall funding.

Over 30 years ago I worked in the DFW area of Texas for an aviation company. I became friends with a line supervisor there who was Hispanic. One day, out of the blue as he’s reading a newspaper, he blurts out to me that he hated “f-ing wetbacks!

Know they can violate our immigration laws, why would they think they can’t violate other laws. If my friend, “Jerry” knows that reporting them will do no good, what would happen if he reported their illegal behavior to police? Nothing! But if they were to find out “Jerry” reported them,… Read more »

30 years is long enough to wait for the wall that, just a couple years ago, Dems wanted at a much higher price. All those ‘federal workers on furlough’? How stupid are they not to plan ahead for something that happens at least every few years? We were military, but… Read more »
