Trump Signs Memo Directing Ban on Bump Stocks

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night he has signed a memo that recommends Attorney General Jeff Sessions push for regulation to ban bump stocks.

At a Medal of Valor ceremony, President Trump made statements for more regulation of accessories that turn rifles into automatic weapons.

“Just a few moments ago, I signed a memo directing the attorney general to propose regulations that ban all devices that turn legal weapons into machine guns,” Trump said, “I expect these regulations to be finalized, Jeff, very soon.”

The purpose of bump stocks is to enable semi-automatic weapons to fire at speeds close to fully automatic guns. Many agree with the president that there is no need for an average American to have this in their possession.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was also asked on Tuesday whether Trump would potentially call for a raised minimum age required to buy a military-style weapon.

“I think that’s certainly something that’s on the table for us to discuss and that we expect to come up over the next couple of weeks,” Sanders said.

This new push for regulation comes after the most recent mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives must review the proposal and rewrite the definition of machine guns to include bump stocks in order for them to be banned. Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores insists this is important to the department.

“The department understands this is a priority for the president and has acted quickly to move through the rulemaking process,” Flores said. “We look forward to the results of that process as soon as it is duly completed.”
