President Donald Trump sprayed cologne on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and asked him how many wives he has during a visit to the Oval Office on Monday.

During a private, bilateral meeting with al-Sharaa at the White House, Trump sprayed cologne on the Syrian president and some of his staff and assured them that it was the “best fragrance,” footage released Wednesday on X by Open Intel showed. While Trump offered another bottle to al-Sharaa’s wife, he blatantly asked if he had multiple wives.

“This is the best fragrance. Okay, so what we’ll do, take that. Put it in. And the other one is for your wife,” Trump said. “How many wives, one? With you guys I never know, right? I never know.”

Al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda commander who fought against the U.S. in Iraq, was once branded a terrorist by the U.S. and was placed under a $10 million U.S. bounty, according to NDTV World. The U.S. government removed him from the terror list before his scheduled meeting with Trump.

This meeting marked the first time that a Syrian leader visited the White House since the country gained its independence in 1946. The visit came after the Trump administration announced on Thursday that it would be extending its pause on sanctions against Syria for another 180 days.

During the historic visit, al-Sharaa presented Trump with symbolic gifts and replicas of ancient Syrian artifacts, according to NDTV World. The Syrian president wants a permanent repeal of sanctions over widespread allegations of human rights abuses by former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s government and security forces. Al-Sharaa-led forces toppled Assad’s regime in December 2024, leading Assad to flee to Russia where he remains to this day.
