Trump Declares Stronger Background Checks ‘Would Not Have Stopped’ the Shootings

President Donald Trump is explaining how both Republicans and Democrats “want to do something” about gun violence, while he’s seemingly pressing the breaks on stronger gun background checks.

The president’s remarks come shortly after the state of Texas was rocked yet again by a mass shooting as a gunman opened fire from his truck across West Texas on Saturday, killing seven people and wounding 22 others, as IJR News reported.

Noting he’d been “speaking to a lot of senators” and House representatives who “want to do something” about gun violence, Trump told reporters outside the White House on Sunday, “We’re doing a package and we will see what it’s all — how it comes about. It’s coming about right now.”

The president then appeared to be backing away from making background checks tougher.

“I will say that for the most part, sadly, if you look at the last four or five, going back even five or six or seven years, for the most part, as strong as you make your background checks, they would not have stopped any of it,” Trump said.

Instead of background checks, Trump pointed to “mental problem” as being the “big problem” when it comes to gun violence.

As IJR Red previously reported, the president also noted on Aug. 20 following two other mass shootings, “I’ve said it a hundred times it’s not the gun that pulls the trigger, it’s the person that pulls the trigger.”

See Trump’s comments below:

Saturday’s mass shooting garnered push from Democratic lawmakers for gun control measures to be passed.

“Enough is enough,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) wrote in a statement. “…The Republican Senate must end its obstruction and finally pass the commonsense, bipartisan, House-passed gun violence prevention legislation that the country is demanding.”

Check out the reactions below:

Odessa Police Chief Michael Gerke shared, “There are no definitive answers as to motive or reasons at this point, but we are fairly certain that the subject did act alone.” However, the gunman was fired from his job the morning of the shooting.

They won’t. The solution is leave 2A alone, allow for CC. Criminals will get guns. There’s no reason a criminal should be carrying when a law abiding citizen isn’t.

Sounds right. I will be amazed if Trump doesn’t go after guns when he gets elected again. I don’t trust the idiots in our government.

The government literally sucks at specific solutions. Look at Obozocare, which helped 20M people at best. Maybe they should have thrown them all on Medicare and left the rest of us alone.

The concept of individual responsibility is unknown/ignored by the Left. They crave power over a disarmed populace of serfs, err, subjects, err economic drones so that nobody and nothing can interfere with their schemes.

Punish the offender, not society as a whole. No gun, knife, bat, bomb, car or other weapon ever killed without a person controlling it. Get the criminals and mentally impaired off the streets. Stop giving people mind altering drugs without constant monitoring. Police should act before the person commits a shooting. Police knew of this person and did nothing. As usual, Democrats use this to call for ‘assault’ weapons ban, though the shooter didn’t use the dreaded AR-15. Democrats never let a tragedy go to waste in supporting their agenda, disarming America, the first step to subjugation. The English did… Read more »

NICS is a good system, but only as good as the information it gets AND far from perfect. If the gun-control crowd wanted to actually accomplish something meaningful they’d improved the system, including mental health and criminal checks, and make criminal penalties for those failing to report. Of course, NICS and other background checks do nothing for criminal sales of firearms. Let the gun-controllers FIRST test and demo their proposed policies on cities like Baltimore, Philly, Chicago, Memphis, etc. It should be easy to implement as those are all already under Dim-control. So far their anti-gun policies are not working.

And of course the Leftist anti-freedoms HATE mob; who know nothing about the NRA or its’ ongoing gun safety, educational and training programs will blame the NRA for the shootings which happen in the United States and every where else in the World. More paperwork (laws) would not have stopped ANY of the past or present shootings nor will more “feels good because we did ‘something'” paperwork stop or prevent the next mass shooting(s) which WILL HAPPEN. More paperwork only infringes upon the Constitutional RIGHTS of law-abiding gun owners; NOT the mentally disturbed who may have lied on the NICS… Read more »
