Trump Takes Credit for GOP Rep. Sanford’s Loss in South Carolina Primary: ‘I Had to Give it a Shot’

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Wednesday morning to celebrate Rep. Mark Sanford’s (R-S.C.) loss in Tuesday’s primary after hurling a last-minute attack at the Republican congressman hours before polls closed.

Hours before polls closed in the South Carolina House District 1 Republican primary, Trump made a last-ditch effort to tank Sanford’s campaign, who had spoken out against the president.

“Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA,” the president tweeted. “He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina. I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!”

Sanford would go on to become the latest incumbent to fall who’s criticize the president in the past, further illustrating just how paramount fealty to Trump is turning out to be for Republicans in the fall midterms.

Shortly after the results rolled in, the president took credit for helping to sink Sandford’s campaign, even acknowledging that he got involved in the race against his advisor’s wishes.

Elsewhere on primary night, another Trump candidate picked up a major victory in Tuesday’s Virginia Senate primary as Corey Stewart picked up the state’s Republican nomination and will now take on the incumbent — former vice presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.).

“Congratulations to Corey Stewart for his great victory for Senator from Virginia,” Trump wrote on Twitter while calling out former campaign rival Sen. Kaine for being “a total stiff” who is “weak on crime and borders, and wants to raise your taxes through the roof.”

“Don’t underestimate Corey, a major chance of winning!” the president added.

Kaine also reacted to Stewart’s primary victory, saying: “Well, I have an opponent. He has stoked the fires of bigotry in Virginia. He’s underfunded public schools and health care. He vows to run a “vicious” campaign against me.”

“That’s not what we need. It’s not who we are,” he added.
