President Donald Trump is set to name two geographical entities.
Among Trump’s first executive orders Monday is to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” according to ABC News.
Trump announced his intentions during a January press conference in Mar-a-Largo. He stated “it’s ours.”
“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America,” Trump said. “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo suggested North America be labeled as “América Mexicana” or “Mexican America,” per The Hill.
Trump also intends to revert the name of Mount Denali to Mount McKinley. President Barack Obama changed the name in 2015
Presidents can rename geographic regions and features via executive order.
The U.S. Board of Geographic Names normally is in charge of geographic names.
