President Donald Trump told reporters Wednesday that his recent back-and-forth on implementing tariffs on Canada and Mexico is not “inconsistency” on his part, but rather “flexibility” to adjust to change.

According to The Hill, Trump made the comments to reporters in the Oval Office, touting flexibility as a strength despite the financial markets being on shaky ground since the idea was introduced.

“There’s no inconsistency,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday. “I have the right to adjust. I was called by the automakers … General Motors, Ford, etcetera, the big three, the big four. They asked me to do them a favor, could I delay it by a period of four weeks so that they’re not driven into a little bit of a disaster for them. They actually love what I’m doing but they had a problem … it’s called flexibility, it’s not inconsistency.”

Trump said that he plans on taking back “what was stolen” from the U.S.

“I’ll always have flexibility, but there will be very little flexibility once we start,” Trump said. “April 2nd is going to be a very big day for the United States of America. United States of America is gonna take back a lot of what was stolen from it by other countries and frankly by incompetent U.S. leadership, grossly incompetent.”

During Trump’s talk with reporters, he was as joined by Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin for the annual St Patrick’s Day celebration. Trump called out Ireland, saying they took advantage of the U.S. while former President Joe Biden was in the White House, according to the Associated Press.

He continued: “I gave you an example of Ireland, I would never have let that happen. Impossible for that to happen, but we’re gonna take back our wealth and we’re gonna take back a lot of the companies that left, they’re coming back … We have the biggest computer chip company ever, ever, has virtually all of the market. I didn’t call them, they called me, and they called for two reason, number one, we had a great election, somebody they want running the country.

Trump detailed how angry he still is about the mismanagement of the nation under Biden‘s watch.

“This country needed somebody to defend it, it’s this big, beautiful place that’s being ripped off by illegal immigrants coming in from prisons, coming in from mental institutions, gang members, gang leaders, drug dealers, pouring into our country with the open borders,” Trump said. “I am so angry at the last four years of what they’ve done to our country, what they’ve done to this country between inflation. Maybe the most that bothers me is they would allow millions of people to come into our country that are stone cold murderers, killers, drug dealers … the worst people allowed into our country.”
