Trump Gives US Consumers an Ultimatum on China Tariffs: Avoid Chinese Products or Pay the Price

President Donald Trump insists “there is no reason for the U.S. Consumer to pay the Tariffs” imposed on China — but there’s a catch, you have to stop buying Chinese manufactured products and goods.

Trump has been docked by countless experts — and even his own top adviser, Larry Kudlow — for the economic harm the country will face over implementing increased China tariffs. However, this has not stopped the president from trying to convince the American people otherwise.

On Monday, during a series of tweets, Trump continued to push his narrative of why he believes increased tariffs will be “very good for [the] USA!”

“There is no reason for the U.S. Consumer to pay the Tariffs, which take effect on China today,” he tweeted, contradicting the research from economists at the World Bank Group, who say there will be a direct trickle down effect from U.S. business to consumers.

Trump then advised that American consumers who don’t want to bear the brunt of China’s higher tariffs should avoid buying products from the country altogether in order to achieve “zero tariffs,” seemingly giving the ultimatum either to “buy the product inside the USA” or pay the price.

“Also, the Tariffs can be … completely avoided if you buy from a non-Tariffed Country, or you buy the product inside the USA (the best idea),” Trump proclaimed. “That’s Zero Tariffs.”

The president went on to explain that “China wants to make a deal so badly!” because they know “Many Tariffed companies will be leaving China for Vietnam and other such countries in Asia.”

However, with the country currently ranking as number one in merchandise exports to America, as well as internationally, according to the World Trade Organization, it’s unclear how quickly or how many businesses will opt out of manufacturing products in China.

Trump claimed that by ending America’s trade deal with China, “there will be nobody left in China to do business with,” adding that it will be “very bad for China, very good for USA!”

He then expanded from his usual criticism on trade deals made from the Obama administration by taking a shot at all of our past presidents who have engaged the country in deal-making.

“China has taken so advantage of the U.S. for so many years, that they are way ahead (Our Presidents did not do the job),” he said.

“Therefore, China should not retaliate-will only get worse!” he added, as China has already been working on implementing countermeasures to Trump’s tariff hike.

Regarding his increased tariffs, he continued to defend himself on Monday, saying “Some people just don’t get it!”

It is unclear how quickly or how impactful the tariff hike will affect the U.S. consumers, but one thing that’s becoming increasingly clear is that Trump may be one of the people who “just don’t get it!”
