According to a CBS News poll, 76 percent of those that were polled approved of the address. Although the final numbers were boosted by a larger amount of Republicans watching, 82 percent of Independents also approved.
While 56 percent think that the speech will unite the country, only 15 percent of Democrats believed it would have that effect. On the topic of immigration, a resounding 72 percent liked what they heard, possibly due to Trump’s unifying words during the address.
“Millions of our fellow citizens are watching us, gathered in this great chamber, hoping we will govern not as two parties, but as one nation,” said Trump. “The agenda I will lay out this evening is not a Republican agenda or Democrat agenda, it is the agenda of the American people.”
