US Representative Amash Quits Republican Party on July 4

U.S. Representative Justin Amash, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump, quit the Republican Party on Thursday, saying politicians have become more loyal to their parties than to the American people.

The congressman from Michigan, the first Republican in Congress to say openly that the president has engaged in impeachable behavior, said he has become disenchanted with party politics and frightened by its consequences.

“The two-party system has evolved into an existential threat to American principles and institutions,” he wrote in a Washington Post opinion piece published on the U.S. Independence Day holiday.

“Instead of acting as an independent branch of government and serving as a check on the executive branch, congressional leaders of both parties expect the House and Senate to act in obedience or opposition to the president and their colleagues on a partisan basis,” Amash wrote.

“Modern politics is trapped in a partisan death spiral, but there is an escape.”

A member of Congress since 2011, Amash, 39, made some high-profile decisions in recent months that chronicled his growing disdain for Trump and subsequent drift from the party.

But it was his decision to speak out on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russian activities during the 2016 presidential election that drew the president’s fury – and a prompt Republican primary challenge.

Amash said in May that the Mueller report showed Trump had obstructed justice, bucking his party and joining Democrats in castigating the president for his actions. “President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct,” he said.

Amash’s comments on the Mueller report echoed the conclusions of many Democrats, but Democrats are divided about impeachment. Most Republicans are still standing by the president at a time of economic growth, turbulent markets and global trade tensions.

Trump quickly returned fire by calling Amash a lightweight and a loser. Soon after, Jim Lower, a Michigan state legislator who described himself as “pro-Trump,” said he would challenge Amash in the 2020 congressional race in Michigan, a state Trump won in 2016.

The president welcomed Amash’s news in an acrimonious Twitter post on Thursday.

“Great news for the Republican Party as one of the dumbest & most disloyal men in Congress is ‘quitting’ the Party. No Collusion, No Obstruction! Knew he couldn’t get the nomination to run again in the Great State of Michigan,” he said.

Amash said in his opinion piece that he believed that most Americans are not rigidly partisan and do not feel well represented by either party.

In February, he became the lone Republican to co-sponsor a resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to reject the emergency Trump declared at the U.S.-Mexico border to build a wall there, in a stinging reprimand to the president.

Last month, Amash left the conservative House Freedom Caucus he helped found, whose members usually defend Trump. Amash has also signaled he would consider running as a libertarian against Trump in 2020, but made no mention of that on Thursday.

“Today, I am declaring my independence and leaving the Republican Party. No matter your circumstance, I’m asking you to join me in rejecting the partisan loyalties and rhetoric that divide and dehumanize us,” Amash said.

  1. Good riddance, we’ll be better off without you!

  2. Don’t let the door hit ya’ where the good Lord split ya’.
Adios Amash. Sure run as a Libertarian.

  3. Adios Amash. Don’t let the door hit ya’ where the good Lord split ya’

  4. Reading the comments below, I feel compelled to remind you folks that the goal is to GROW the Party NOT shrink it. Pre- Trump, 29 % of the country was registered Republican. That is now down to 24%. Independent registrations are at record highs. Just a common sense reminder.

    1. I hope this makes you feel better, as this country is being destroyed by socialist leaning fools looking for power. If this country goes the route of denying free speech for half of its people, what makes you think it wont be denied for the other half…. its not plan for democracy

    2. That’s because we are so disappointed by the limp-wristed swamp dwellers, like McCain, Romney, and the other losers. I describe myself as a conservative, not a republican. I never contribute to the RNC or NSRC. Only directly to those I want in office, like President Trump.

  5. It’s puzzling to me how people this stupid can get elected to Congress in the first place. His July 4 statement is about as coherent as the Unibomber’s writings.

    1. It is MORE puzzling that you do understand what Amash is saying. One has to be in denial or blind not SEE the obvious. Amash has one standard to judge D’s & R’s administration. If Trump was still a registered Democrat he would be saying the same thing. I realize that it is a foreign concept to Trumpers but you MUST realize that you are doing it. Replace the name of Trump and Trump campaign with Obama or Clinton in the Mueller report and a D would have already been impeached. Imagine if Clinton added 2 Trillion to the national debt during a good economy—Justin bashed Obama for adding to the debt in 2009!!—

  6. Right! The democrats really represent the best interest of the American people by spending tons of taxpayer money trying to overthrow not only the duly elected president but also the whole U.S. government. Good riddance. No time for turncoats.

    1. Overthrow??? Were R’s attempting to “overthrow” Obama with the Benghazi investigations? Even after all the conspiracies were disproved, you insisted on having one more. Jason Chaffetz claimed just before the election that he would continue the investigation of Hillary. Was his plan to “overthrow” Clinton?? Screwtape is always talking about starting a civil war—He’s not a D. He’s a Trumper through and through.

  7. GOOD RIDDENCE TO REALLY BAD RUBBISH. YOU WERE NEVER A REPUBLICAN ANYWAY. WHEW THE SMELL IS GONE.

  8. Why would he have run under this banner to start with? Basic common sense and judgement would make anyone do otherwise unless…this was a purposeful plan to prove a point!!

  9. Good one less creature in the swamp, he is going to get beat in 2020 anyway.

  10. #ByeFelicia – cause for even more celebration. Fake GOP gone!

  11. This man got into his position as a Congressperson by running as a Republican. He could have run as the Democrat he claims to be now but he chose not to. I hope he has a big-money supporting backer because he won’t be getting the same backing he got from the Republican party. Changing his party may not guarantee his re-election and whoever thinks he did the right thing doesn’t fully understand how people are selected to run for office.

    1. What are you talking about, MariaRose?

Amash never said that he was going to join the Democratic Party. Go back and read the article again. Wow, you are confused by your hate.

      1. She makes perfect sense to me. I think it is you who remains in a constant state of confusion.

  12. Good. The people of Michigan don’t need a lying hateful pos.

  13. This clown has shown his true colors for sometime. He is finally just making it official and sadly trying to be relevant.

  14. “Free at last, Free at last. Thank God, Thank God, we’re free at last” From this fool.

  15. Glaf he quit. He was just another RINO. Wish more like him, both Republucan and Demonrats would do the same,so more Loyal one would be elected and this country could start fixing whats wrong,ie; Illegal aliens,Border security,Domestic Terrorists,

  16. HE said “politicians have become more loyal to their parties than to the American people.” speaking of the Republican party! WTH DOSE HE THINK THE DEMARCATE PARTY IS DOING!!! THEY ARE NOT FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE USA!!!!!! THEY ARE FOR ILLEGALS!!!!!! SO I GUESS HE IS ALSO!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. I will personally donate to his opponent to help with his defeat even though I don’t live in Michigan.

  18. Don’t let the door hit ya’ where the good Lord split ya’. But he was elected as a Republican not an independent. As if….he is more of a Democrat than he admits. But wonder what that does to his Congressional district?

  19. So the DEMOCRATS are not EXTREMELY partisan? 100% across the board against the wall? Obstruction- Mueller was on a witch hunt. He did NOT pursue the DEMOCRATS that actually did have verifiable transactions with the Russians. Mueller immediately made himself an adversary of Trump. TRUMP did look into legal ways of defending himself. He should have claimed executive priviledge right away. Good riddance Amash.

  20. He needs to be replaced with a real Republican for the rest of his term.

  21. He should step down now because the people that elected him got played by him

  22. I doubt he was ever a Republican. So now that he is denouncing the party that elected him can we ‘un-elect’ him?

  23. He was never a Republican. Just an idiot Democrat who infiltrated the Republican Party. Good riddance.

  24. He should have signed up to be a Democrat. He votes with them all the time anyway

  25. oh thank the good lord this ass clown is gone. he never represented conservatives or the administrations policies. Trump ran on immigration, trade and the economy, he won the American presidential election and should by all means be allowed to move his administration’s policies forward as the American people voted for those policies. these fricken RHINO need to get out of the way and let Trump move our country into a better and stronger position. Democrats are doing what is expected as an opposing party but are taking things to far with hyperbole. dems/libs have always used words to move politics in their direction but the words they’re using these days are ripping the country apart and they do not care, they’re ok with people being beaten, lied about, MSM pushing an anti-American narrative and our colleges becoming a breeding ground for communism. dems/libs say its Trump who is changing our countries political landscape but it’s the Democrats who’ve done this and continue to do it with their anti-american rhetoric. they’re pushing their party so far to the left that most Democrats don’t even recognize their own party.

  26. His actions lately have shown he is not a real republican.

    1. Joey is confused.

Amash showed tbat he doesn’t put party above the Constitution.

  27. Is Amash a man of conscience or just a RINO/wannabe Dim? Let’s see if he continues to caucus with them.

I hope Lower defeats him in the primary.

  28. What a crock of bovine excrement! The Dimwit Party has ALWAYS been “Party over People” as evidenced by some of its’ ancient members – Schumer, Pelosi, Nadler, et al.

Former Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) was a living, breathing example of a religious devotion to Party over the people he was elected BY and obligated to represent. Nelson NEVER voted for anything for the people; but ALWAYS voted as he was told by his leadership on the Dimwit side of history. Nelson was in D.C. for nearly 46 years before being defeated by Rick Scott (R-FL) in 2018. Floridians simply had had enough of not having two Senators.

Goodbye, RINO Amash and good riddance!
