The U.S. president and first lady received a patriotic welcome from U.S. military personnel as they boarded the USS Wasp for a Memorial Day visit in Japan.

After touring the JS Kaga at Yokosuka Naval Base to deliver a Memorial Day speech to the men and women of the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet, as well as the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Forces, President Donald Trump spent time with troops aboard the USS Wasp.

The U.S. first lady Melania Trump opened up with her appreciation to Japan’s hospitality during their visit overseas while extending thankfulness to U.S. troops.

“Thank you for your service and sacrifice and all that you do on behalf of our country,” Melania said. “May God bless you and your families.”

The military members in attendance broke out into “USA!” chants as they offered a warm welcome to the president.

Kicking off his speech, Trump showered Melania with appreciation for her work as the first lady.

“[…] They love you in Japan, honey, and we appreciate it very much,” he said. “She really works very hard. They love our first lady, and they love our first lady back home.”

While wishing the “the brave sailors and Marines, the Seventh Fleet” a “very Happy Memorial Day,” Trump said there’s “no higher honor than serving as your Commander-in-Chief — and the extraordinary men and women of the American Armed Forces.”

Trump discussed plans with the troops to use steam-powered catapults — which “has only worked for about 65 years, perfectly” — instead of electric for new U.S. aircrafts.

“So I think I’m going to put an order,” he said. “When we build a new aircraft carrier, we’re going to use steam. I’m going to just put out an order: We’re going to use steam.”

Additionally, the president announced that the USS America would deploy to the Pacific soon, “carrying the most beautiful F-35Bs on her deck. Brand new.”

“My administration is committed to ensuring that America’s military strength forever remains second to none,” he declared.

“[…] Together, you are advancing freedom on the high seas, shielding our nation from dangerous weapons, and preserving the peace that generations of valiant American warriors gave their lives to secure.”

Trump honored a fallen military member, Private First Class John Schaeffer, who fought in the Pacific during World War II and “sadly perished in the Battle of Burma” but “his deep love of country endures in someone very special with us today.”

Schaeffer’s grandnephew, Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel Schaeffer, responded to the recognition, as he said:

“Memorial Day is that time where we honor our fellow Americans who pay the ultimate sacrifice.  So, you know, thank you for all my shipmates and fellow Marines that are out here today, it’s a great day. Thank you, Mr. President.”

The president showed his gratitude toward those who serve, as Americans honored fallen service members on Memorial Day:

“Today, the unbreakable resolve of these heroes lives on in every American who wears our great uniform. Each day that you serve on these rolling but beautiful seas, you honor their sacrifice, you carry on their righteous duty, and you continue their noble legacy. Our republic endures because of brave men and women who are willing to lay down their lives to defend us all. Our freedom is earned through the blood, and sweat, and toil, and sacrifice of great American patriots just like you.”

Trump pledged his “unwavering devotion” to those in uniform, later adding, “On behalf of all Americans, we thank you, we salute you, we honor you, we cherish you, and we stand with you now and forever.”
