At the 46th annual March for Life event in Washington, D.C, on Friday — a rally that protests abortion — the president and vice president made a surprise visit to show their support.

Vice President Mike Pence delivered a speech, telling the crowd, “President Donald Trump is the most pro-life president in American history.”

The vice president, accompanied by the second lady Karen Pence, urged the anti-abortion activists to “stand with that love and compassion.”

“You stand for life,” he said. “And know that we will stand with you until that great day comes where we restore the sanctity of life to the center of American law.”

“Know that He who said, ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you’ also said ‘I will never forsake you,'” Pence said during his speech, citing a Bible verse.

“When we look into the eyes of a newborn child, we see the beauty and the human soul and the majesty of God’s creation,” the president said. “We know that every life has meaning.”

President Trump drew cheers from the crowd as he said that he “will always defend the first right in our Declaration of Independence: the right to life.”
