Democratic New York mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani faced a profanity-laced confrontation in Staten Island on Wednesday when a local man called him a âJew-hating piece of shit.â
Mamdani has previously defended slogans like âglobalize the intifadaâ and âfrom the river to the sea,â telling âThe Bulwarkâ host Tim Miller he opposed banning the language â which prompted backlash from Jewish advocacy groups and critics of his position on Israel. Conservative artist Scott LoBaido confronted Mamdani as he walked out of a Staten Island restaurant, shouting expletives, accusing him of hating Jews, and telling him he wasnât welcome in the neighborhood.
âYou are not welcome in this f*cking island. You f*cking Jew-hating piece of sh*t,â LoBaido shouted at Mamdani. âHey. Mr. Man-dandy! Can I talk to you? Youâre not welcome here.â
âYou hate Jews. You hate this f*cking country,â LoBaido continued. He also appeared to invoke the name of Tom Homan, the acting director of Immigration and Customs enforcement.
During an interview with âMeet the Pressâ host Kristen Welker in June, Mamdani repeatedly refused to condemn the phrase âglobalize the intifada.â He also said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he visited New York City, and defended the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Mamdani appeared on MSNBCâs âThe Briefing with Jen Psakiâ and pledged to boost funding for the cityâs hate crime programs by 800% to help âroot outâ antisemitism.
Mamdani secured the Democratic mayoral nomination by defeating former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the June primary. Cuomo and New York Mayor Eric Adams are both running in the mayoral election.
