As IJR Red reported on Thursday, Trump proposed a new immigration proposal that which would increase the ratio for the number of immigrants admitted for “merit-based” reasons, and consequently decrease the number of immigrants who would be allowed in the U.S. based off family connections.
Recapping this information, CNN “New Day” host John Berman asked Waters of her thoughts on the idea. Waters agreed that “we need comprehensive immigration reform” — just not in the form of Trump’s proposal.
She argued that a truly effective comprehensive immigration plan would be one that “takes into consideration those people who are in the country illegally, takes into consideration whether or not there would be employment efforts.”
She added that illegal immigrants should not “necessarily be given citizenship status” but should have the opportunity to stay in the U.S. and “supply labor.”

Waters went on to say “asylum [for] those people whose lives are threatened” is also something that needs to be considered.
The congresswoman then denounced Trump’s immigration plan for being “based on exciting and inciting those people who have negative thoughts about others coming across our border,” adding that he’s “basically working to use that information to promote himself in a campaign.”
“And I think some of that is very racist,” Waters continued.
Asked for the specific elements of the proposal that are racist, Waters laid out her reasoning for the claim:
“This business about you must speak English, or we’re going to give you points for speaking English, and we don’t want poor people, we only want those people who are earning substantial wages already. All of those things are not keeping in step with the way that we treat human beings.”
Democrats have shown their extreme resistance on the plan and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has deemed it “dead on arrival,” however Trump insisted on Friday that there’s a “good chance” Dems will back him on the immigration proposal.
