White House: Trump ‘Pleased’ Democrats ‘Have Come to Their Senses’ on Government Shutdown

Just after Senate Democrats approved a Monday deal to end the government shutdown, President Donald Trump issued a statement expressing how glad he was they came “to their senses.”

“I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses,” Trump said, in a statement read on Monday by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Trump was referring to senators’ Monday agreement to pass a continuing resolution with open negotiations on legal protections for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

The agreement came amid a three-day shutdown that resulted from Republicans and Democrats’ inability to compromise on immigration, something the White House said Democrats should consider separately from keeping the government running.

“As I’ve always said, once the government is funded, my administration will work toward solving the problem of very unfair, illegal immigration. We will make a long-term deal on immigration if and only if it’s good for our country,” Trump said.

While Democrats demanded DACA protections after Trump ended the program last year, the president repeatedly said he wouldn’t accept an immigration deal without funding for a southern border wall.

“The president’s number one focus is our national security,” Sanders said.

“He’s been very strong on discussing the need for border security and tying that directly to national security. That’s a big focus of both the president’s campaign at the time and also since he’s become president.”

Sanders suggested that Democrats approved Monday’s deal because they realized their position was “indefensible.”

“They agreed with everything that was in this CR,” Sanders said.

“The president stayed firm, Republicans stayed firm. And Democrats, I think, realized that they had to move past that piece of legislation so that they could focus on a conversation they’re desperate to have.”
