“The View” co-host Whoopi Goldberg baselessly attacked Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, during a Tuesday segment over the government contracts it receives to help the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Goldberg argued that SpaceX, Musk’s private space exploration company, should be cut since the U.S. already has NASA and accused Musk of wanting to cut the government agency to profit more off of his own company. The co-host failed to mention that SpaceX directly collaborates with NASA and receives contracts from the agency to send its astronauts, satellites and other systems into outer space.
“Let me say some place that could really use a lot of cutting,” Goldberg began. “Elon has very many government contracts. I think, because I don’t remember, maybe you all have heard it, I don’t remember looking for an armored car. I don’t care what it looks like, I don’t remember asking for it, I don’t know why I’m paying for it. I want to know, when did I say ‘hey, we need another agency next to NASA.’ So when did we start paying for his SpaceX? You know that he’s gonna be cutting NASA. That’s the competition. So what is the real deal here? If we want to cut some money, let’s cut some of these.”
Though Goldberg claimed that SpaceX is competing against NASA, the space agency is actually a customer of Musk’s company.
WATCH:
SpaceX has received more than $18 billion in federal contracts over the last decade, with NASA making up $13 billion of those contracts, according to federal spending data. NASA handed SpaceX a $2.9 billion contract in 2021 to build a spacecraft for long-term human exploration of the moon under its Artemis program and to send the first woman to the moon.
NASA is further collaborating with SpaceX to develop a lunar lander that includes an uncrewed test mission and a crewed lunar landing and return mission. NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is also working alongside Musk’s company to develop and operate new spacecraft and systems capable of carrying crews to low-orbit Earth and the International Space Station.
Musk, who is largely overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is currently working to cut the size of the federal government to make it more efficient and eliminate the wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. He dismantled the U.S. Agency of International Development on Feb. 3 over its billions of dollars in spending on left-wing causes worldwide, and is preparing to review the spending of other federal agencies.
