During the House Judiciary Committee’s first day of impeachment hearings, one of the constitutional scholars invoked the name of President Donald Trump’s youngest son, Barron, causing something of a social media firestorm.
During an exchange with a Democratic lawmaker, Stanford law professor Pamela Karlan tried to highlight the difference between a president and a king. The example she used did not go over well.
“I’ll just give you one example that shows the difference between him and a king, which is, the Constitution says there can no titles of nobility. So while the president can name his son Barron, he can’t make him a baron.”

Those comments drew swift backlash from Trump’s campaign and defenders of the president, who said Karlan broke the unspoken rule of not attacking the president’s family.
“Only in the minds of crazed liberals is it funny to drag a 13-year-old child into the impeachment nonsense,” Kayleigh McEnany, a Trump campaign spokesperson, said in a statement.
“Only in the minds of crazed liberals is it funny to drag a 13-year-old child into the impeachment nonsense. Pamela Karlan thought she was being clever and going for laughs, but she instead reinforced for all Americans that Democrats have no boundaries when it comes to their hatred of everything related to President Trump. Hunter Biden is supposedly off-limits according to liberals, but a 13-year-old boy is fair game. Disgusting.”
McEnany called on Congressional Democrats to “immediately repudiate Pamela Karlan and call on her to personally apologize to the president and the first lady for mocking their son on national TV.”
Twitter exploded with users sharing disapproval of Karlan’s decision to invoke Barron:
A minor child deserves privacy and should be kept out of politics. Pamela Karlan, you should be ashamed of your very angry and obviously biased public pandering, and using a child to do it.— Melania Trump (@FLOTUS) December 4, 2019
Hunter Biden is off-limits but Barron Trump is not? https://t.co/k4I8iK7y39— Kellyanne Conway (@KellyannePolls) December 4, 2019
So it’s okay for the Left to mock 13-year-old Barron Trump,— Ryan Fournier (@RyanAFournier) December 4, 2019
But God forbid we say anything about truant Greta Thunberg.
Matt Gaetz SLAMS witness Pamela Karlan for invoking 13 year old Barron Trump in her attack on Trump.— Caleb Hull ??? (@CalebJHull) December 4, 2019
He then asks, "If you have personal knowledge of a single material fact in the Schiff report, please raise your hand."
For the record, in the interests of fairness, it was a bad idea for Pam Karlan to bring in Barron Trump. We should leave children out of these debates, period, unless they are adults and relevant in some way.— Ruth Marcus (@RuthMarcus) December 4, 2019
One of Democrats' impeachment witnesses, the one who says she can't walk on the sidewalk in front of Trump hotel because of her hatred for Bad Orange Man, just went after Barron Trump, if you're wondering how things are going.— Mollie (@MZHemingway) December 4, 2019

Democrats spent Father’s Day attacking Barron
Peter Fonda called for Barron to be locked in “a cage with pedophiles”
These people are sick & only care about children when it’s politcally convenient for them.
Sooo… Democrats laugh at jokes about Barron Trump… but are deeply offended by the mere mention of the name Hunter Biden during the #ImpeachmentHearing… got it.— Tim Young (@TimRunsHisMouth) December 4, 2019
I’ve really had enough of the attacks on Barron Trump. He is a child and you are HYPOCRITES.— Madison Gesiotto (@madisongesiotto) December 4, 2019
Republicans: What evidence is there for impeachment?— Liz Wheeler (@Liz_Wheeler) December 4, 2019
Democrats: LET'S INVOKE BARRON TRUMP.
Even major Trump critics disapprove of Pamela Karlan's shot at 13-year-old Barron Trump: https://t.co/M45yvnkQlV— Ryan Saavedra (@RealSaavedra) December 4, 2019
The Democrats’ witnesses are so incredibly biased. They came in having argued for impeachment for years. I hope America understands that the Democrats brought radical, Leftist witnesses for today’s hearing. One even made fun of Barron Trump.— Rep Andy Biggs (@RepAndyBiggsAZ) December 4, 2019
This is not serious. This is a sham.
Me: Hard to imagine how Dems could drop the ball on impeachment hearings they have complete control over.— Seth Mandel (@SethAMandel) December 4, 2019
Dems: "… and that's why we're today introducing articles of impeachment against Barron Trump"
Invoking the name of the President's 13 year old son to make a joke. Reprehensible. pic.twitter.com/cLuW31NQRT— Mark Meadows (@RepMarkMeadows) December 4, 2019
What we got today: 3 witnesses, with long records of liberal bias, one of whom made a joke about a 13 year old kid and disparaged conservatives living in rural areas.— Mark Meadows (@RepMarkMeadows) December 4, 2019
And then one witness, who opposes Trump, still saying the record does not support impeachment.
You tell me.
Media eagerly rode to the rescue to prevent any criticism of Joe Biden's 50-year-old, cocaine-snorting, stripper-impregnating, Ukrainian oligarch-coddling "child," but I'm skeptical that we'll see them defend Trump's 13-year-old son with the same vigor. https://t.co/gxPmYZMG4a— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) December 4, 2019
Defenders of Karlan says she was using a pun to make a point and was not trying to make fun of Barron Trump.
However, Karlan later apologized for her comments, “I want to apologize for what I said earlier about the President’s son, it was wrong for me to do that.”
