When police in Sacramento, CA, responded to a report of a woman carrying a skull on a stick last week, it’s unlikely they realized the strange incident would result in such a grisly discovery.
Just like a witness reported, responding officers found the homeless woman with the skull and questioned her.
She reportedly led them to a recently abandoned homeless camp nearby, where officers found a decomposing body.
“A call like this is not something that happens every day. We hope we can get down to the bottom of what caused this person to become deceased,” Sacramento police Sgt. Bryce Heinlein said.
A man who lives near the abandoned encampment told Fox 40 that he smelled something terrible, but assumed it was a dead cat, not a human being.
“I went to walk back there and thought, Damn! What the hell is that smell? It made me sick to my stomach, so I turned my ass around and came back here,” he recalled.
Police said the cause of death in the case is still unknown. The body still needs to be examined by the coroner to determine what killed the unidentified person.
The woman found carrying the skull was not immediately charged with any crimes.
“Foul play has not been determined, therefore we are awaiting the Sacramento County Coroner’s report for further information,” the Sacramento Police Department said in a statement.
