Democrats celebrated major election victories this week but remain without a clear figure to lead their divided party.

Off-cycle wins across key states showed the strength of an energized liberal base, yet a new POLITICO Poll revealed that most 2024 Kamala Harris voters can’t name a single Democratic leader. The top response was “I don’t know,” followed by “nobody.”

Harris was the most frequent answer but still earned only 16% of support among her own voters. California Gov. Gavin Newsom followed distantly with 6%, while other top mentions included former presidents and congressional leaders.

“This is where we are, guys,” said Democratic strategist Lauren Harper Pope. “The party is divided factionally and ideologically. I couldn’t tell you who the leader of the Democratic Party is, either, and I work in Democratic politics.”

The election results offered a boost for Democrats after losses in 2024. Victories by Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani showed strength across both moderate and progressive wings.

“It felt like we’re getting our footing back,” said Lanae Erickson of Third Way. “But that has not yet translated to people seeing clearly who they think is pointing the direction of the party.”

Among Republicans, 81% of Trump voters named President Donald Trump as their leader, showing stark contrast to Democrats’ uncertainty.

Strategist Jared Leopold said the lack of consensus is typical for a party out of power. “Democrats were successful Tuesday as a big tent party running on affordability and against Donald Trump,” he said. “That’s the equation that will work as we move toward 2028.”
