‘You Know What Else Is Voted On by the People?’: Taylor Swift Uses Awards Speech to Push Midterms

The American Music Awards (AMA) stayed relatively politically neutral compared to award shows in the past two years. The Tuesday night program was mainly focused on the music, with a couple of references to the 2018 midterms — including one from Taylor Swift.

Swift broke her silence on politics for the first time Monday, expressing that she would vote for Tennessee Democrats in the midterms.

However, the end of her message encouraged all people to participate in the election.

“Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values,” she said in an Instagram post. “For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.”

Her message on the AMA stage was similar. Accepting her third award of the night and breaking a record for most AMAs earned by a woman at the same time, Swift ended her speech with

“This award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people. And you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections on Nov. 6. Get out and vote. I love you guys.”

The show’s host, Tracee Ellis Ross, also made a bipartisan statement on voting by wearing a graphic T-shirt labeled, “I am a voter.”

R&B artist Khalid gave a subtle shoutout to Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke.

“Shoutout to El Paso, Texas,” Khalid said, referencing both his hometown and O’Rourke’s. “Shoutout Beto.”

The American Music Awards is the last major televised award show before the 2018 midterms.

  1. What an anarchist she is telling voters to do the responsible thing of educating themselves about the candidates and issues, then and getting out to vote. Wow. I’ve never seen such audacity.

    1. Wow insipid, “I’ve never seen such audacity.” Then you haven’t read 90% of your own posts.

    2. She should educate herself before she asks others to get educated.

  2. Beautiful, Talented, Intelligent, and a Down To Earth Democrat! Love You Taylor Swift!

  3. Shows how stupid she really is. Regular people dont vote on the AMAs. They are voted on by people in her own industry.
