Actor Matthew McConaughey is urging people in the U.S. to come together, while also calling on those who are starting to re-engage in society to wear a mask amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think wearing a mask is not propaganda. I don’t think it’s partisanship or politics. I think a mask is all about our purpose right now,” McConaughey said during Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier” interview on Tuesday.

The award-winning actor is sending the message to others about urging against partisan politics and staying united amid the pandemic. He specifically noted the politics surrounding wearing a mask.

“This created a false divide, sort of two wars in America — an us versus them war and us versus the virus war,” he said. “If we try to fight both of those wars, we’re going to lose both of them, but if we try to fight the one against the virus, which is the one we should be fighting, then we’re going to beat it.”

McConaughey later noted that he does not see a “solution” right now, adding that “we are waiting for science to catch up with us in this predicament.”

“I don’t know if the federal government is doing all it can,” he said. “I know they’re doing a lot.”

“Act locally. […] I don’t think these are solutions. I think they’re Band-Aids to hold off until science catches up. […] This is uncharted waters. There’s not a playbook. I understand that.”

The United States is currently the country with the most reported coronavirus cases, reaching over 1,370,000 cases and more than 82,000 deaths, as of Wednesday morning.
