Former White House national security adviser John Bolton does not plan to vote for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in the upcoming general election, nor for President Donald Trump.

Bolton’s spokesperson said on Sunday evening that the former national security adviser will not be voting for either Trump or Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

“This statement is incorrect. The Ambassador never said he planned to vote for Joe Biden,” Bolton spokesperson Sarah Tinsley told Axios. “He has consistently said in recent days he will be writing in the name of a conservative Republican. Let there be no doubt — he will not be voting for Trump or Biden.”

The remarks come after The Telegraph published a report on Sunday that claimed Bolton said he would be voting for Biden in the upcoming general election.

Bolton then said in an interview with ABC’s Martha Raddatz, aired on Sunday, “I don’t think he’s a conservative Republican. I’m not going to vote for him in November — certainly not going to vote for Joe Biden either.”

He added, “I’m gonna figure out a conservative Republican to write in.”

Bolton also said, “I don’t think [Trump’s] fit for office. I don’t think he has the competence to carry out the job. I don’t think he’s a conservative Republican.”

During the interview, Bolton said he hopes history will remember Trump as a “one-term president who didn’t plunge the country irretrievably into a downward spiral we can’t recall from.”

He continued:

“We can get over one term. I have absolute confidence — even if it’s not the miracle of a conservative Republican being elected in November. Two terms, I’m more troubled about. But I’m really troubled about the absence as well of a viable national security wing in the Democratic Party. So this is an election for me of a choice of two unacceptable alternatives. And it’s not one I relish.”

Bolton’s interview with ABC News comes ahead of his scheduled book release of “The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir” on Tuesday.
