Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden insisted Americans who died in war should be honored for their sacrifice as he criticized President Donald Trump for his alleged remarks referring to them as “losers.”

Biden released a statement late Thursday in response to the report published by The Atlantic detailing Trump’s alleged remarks.

Biden also tweeted his promise to Americans if he has the honor of assuming the presidency.

He tweeted, “Here’s my promise to you: If I have the honor of serving as the next commander in chief, I will ensure that our American heroes know that I will have their back and honor their sacrifice. Always.”

In the statement, Biden noted that the report is another indication of how much he and Trump disagree on what it means to serve as President of the United States.

“If the revelations in today’s Atlantic article are true, then they are yet another marker of how deeply President Trump and I disagree about the role of the President of the United States,” Biden said in the statement.

Biden reiterated America’s “one truly sacred obligation” to military families as he encouraged Americans to honor the bravery and legacy of those who have served our nation and, subsequently, lost their lives doing so.

“From the front lines of our own Revolution to Belleau Wood to the Normandy beaches to the mountains of Afghanistan, the sacrifice and bravery of our troops and their willingness to serve our nation should be honored,” Biden said. “Duty, honor, country — those are the values that drive our service members.”

He added, “Those are the values that have formed the core of America’s defense for centuries. And if I have the honor of serving as the next commander in chief, I will ensure that our American heroes know that I will have their back and honor their sacrifice — always.”

Biden’s remarks come amid heightened backlash the president has faced over the report. The critical reactions prompted the White House spokesperson Alyssa Farah to release a statement addressing the situation. Farah denied the allegations in the report.

“President Trump holds the military in the highest regard,” Farah told The Atlantic. “He’s demonstrated his commitment to them at every turn: delivering on his promise to give our troops a much needed pay raise, increasing military spending, signing critical veterans reforms, and supporting military spouses. This has no basis in fact.”
