Marc Thiessen, a speechwriter for former President George W. Bush, offered harsh criticism for President Joe Biden over the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

As images surfaced of chaotic scenes at the Hamid Karzai International Airport as thousands of Afghans tried to flee the country, Thiessen ripped into the president for the situation in Afghanistan.

During Monday’s appearance on Fox News, Thiessen said, “Here’s what’s in my head, on Sept. 11, 2001, Americans were literally falling from the sky, jumping from the Twin Towers to escape the fires that had been set by al-Qaeda and the Taliban.”

“Today, in Afghanistan, at Kabul airport, Afghans are falling from the sky, literally hanging onto the fuselages of American planes, desperately trying to escape the Taliban and al-Qaeda knowing that they will face certain death because they can’t hold onto those planes. That is what’s happening in Afghanistan today. It is the most shameful thing I have seen in my entire career in Washington,” he continued.

Finally, Thiessen said, “It is shameful that Joe Biden hasn’t spoken to the American people for six days while this plays out. But what can he say? How can you defend the indefensible? Either Joe Biden completely miscalculated, in which case he’s incompetent, or he knew this would be the result and didn’t care, in which case he’s a horrible human being. In either case, the American people deserve better from their commander in chief.”

Biden is scheduled to deliver remarks on the situation in Afghanistan on Monday afternoon.

Thiessen’s comments come as the Taliban has taken control of Afghanistan, prompting thousands of Afghan people to rush to the airport in an attempt to escape.

Biden administration officials believed that the Afghan government might collapse in six to 12 months, and admit that they are surprised by the speed at which the Taliban moved to take control of the country as the U.S. withdrew its forces.

On Monday, images and videos surfaced of Afghan people clinging to the sides of U.S. military planes desperate to escape. Some videos showed people falling off the planes during take-off.
