Former President Donald Trump says President Joe Biden has “humiliated” the country with the withdrawal from Afghanistan, which has led to chaotic scenes as officials rush to evacuate Americans and Afghan allies after the Taliban take over.

During an appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity” on Tuesday night, Trump said, “It’s a terrible time for our country. I don’t think in all of the years our country has ever been so humiliated.”

“I don’t know what you call it a military defeat or a psychological defeat. There’s never been anything like what’s happened here. You can go back to Jimmy Carter with the hostages. We all thought that was a great embarrassment, and we were pulled out of that by Ronald Reagan. This is many, many times worse,” he added.

Trump’s comments referenced the 1979 Iran hostage crisis when students stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. The hostages we held for 444 days and released on Jan. 21, 1981, shortly after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president.

He noted the thousands of Americans still in Afghanistan following the Taliban’s take over of the country.

NBC News reports that there are an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Americans still in Afghanistan as officials continue their efforts to get them and Afghan allies out of the country.

However, the administration reportedly “doesn’t have a plan to evacuate U.S. citizens outside Kabul because of Taliban checkpoints.”

Biden has faced bipartisan criticism for the execution of the withdrawal as Afghanistan quickly fell to the Taliban. He has also faced criticism from U.S. allies.

Biden defended the withdrawal arguing that a peace agreement negotiated by the Trump administration placed him in a position to choose between withdrawing or sending more U.S. troops into Afghanistan to fight the Taliban.

He also argued that the country’s collapse “reinforced that ending military involvement in Afghanistan now was the right decision.”

Still, Trump has not held back in his criticism of his successor. In a statement earlier this week, he suggested that Biden should “resign in disgrace” over the withdrawal.
