5 Percent of Adults Say Biden Has Performed ‘Better Than Expected,’ Despite His Claim He ‘Outperformed’: Poll

WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 21: U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks after Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger announced that his company will spend $20 billion to build what he says will be the world's biggest chipmaking hub in Ohio in the South Court Auditorium of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on January 21, 2022 in Washington, DC. Gelsinger made the announcement before traveling to Ohio with Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) to announce the project there. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

President Joe Biden believes he has “outperformed” what “anybody thought” he could do in his first year in office.

But, according to a new NBC News poll released on Sunday, a majority of Americans do not believe the president has performed better than expected.

During a segment of NBC’s “Meet The Press,” host Chuck Todd broke down some of the results of the network’s latest poll.

“Our new NBC News poll suggests Mr. Biden does need a reset because he’s lost his identity a bit. He’s no longer seen as competent and effective, no longer seen as a good commander-in-chief or perhaps most damaging, as easy-going and likable,” Todd said.

He continued, “In fact, just 5% of adults say Mr. Biden has performed better than expected as president. One the many lowests, firsts, and fewests in our poll.”

The host went on to point out that the poll found that 54% of Americans disapprove of Biden’s job performance while 43% approve.

“If you look at history, history shows that kind of presidential approving rating leads to a shellacking for the party in power,” Todd added.

Additionally, the poll found that 72% of Americans said the country is on the “wrong track,” while 22% said it is going in the “right direction.” According to Todd, that is only the third time in the poll’s 30-year history where the division between “wrong track” and “right direction” was that large.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Biden was asked if he had “overpromised” what he could deliver in his first year.

“I didn’t overpromise. I have probably outperformed what anybody thought would happen,” Biden responded.

He added, “The fact of the matter is we’re in a situation where we have made enormous progress. You mentioned the deaths from Covid, it was three times that not long ago. It’s coming down. Everything’s changing. It’s getting better.”
