Medication Abortion Makes Up Majority of US Abortions, Study Shows

TLAPA-GUERRERO, MEXICO- AUGUST 5: Irinea Clemente holds birth control pills on August 5, 2007 in Tlapa-Guerrero, exico. Irinea Clemente, a 37-year-old indigenous, Mixteco-speaking mother unable to support another child but afraid of being likened to a prostitute for having an abortion. She spent three days in her tiny home, assisted by an aunt, forcefully massaged out her fetus. Shaken by the experience and the desperate measures some women resort to, Clemente now works with an underground network of pro-choice doctors to hand out condoms, birth control pill and emergency contraception to women in her neighborhood. A new study shows more people are choosing medication abortion when terminating a pregnancy in the United States.

Children are a reward from God, according to Psalm 127:3, but according to Worldometers, there have been over 6.5 million abortions so far this year, as of Friday afternoon.

A survey done for “known abortion providers” in the U.S. by Guttmacher Institute shows that in 2020, 54% of U.S. abortions were done by medication abortion. The last survey that was done in 2017 shows that 39% of abortions were done by using abortion pills.

According to “Good Morning America,” “The Supreme Court is expected to rule this spring on a case that has the potential to upend Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark case that made abortion a federally protected right in the U.S.”

Many states are already preparing laws to restrict abortion access, including abortion via medication.

NEW: In 2020, #MedicationAbortion was used for the majority of US abortions according to preliminary findings from our experts. These data underscore just how central this method has become to providing and accessing abortion care. More in our analysis: https://t.co/l6Qomd9lxQ

With a 20-year track record of safe & effective use, #MedicationAbortion has become a game changer in expanding abortion care. Looking ahead, it’ll likely be an even more important option as anti-abortion policymakers seek to ban or restrict abortion access. #AbortionIsEssential

Just last year, Texas carried out a ban on most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy and now has established a law restricting access to medication abortion. This includes banning mailing out abortion-inducing drugs and lessening the time frame in which physicians are allowed to give the medication to seven weeks.

Out of all 50 states, most are prepared to ban abortion if Roe vs. Wade is overturned, according to a Guttmacher Institute report released last year.

Medication abortions have been available in the U.S. for 22 years. The drug “mifepristone” was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000, but then became temporarily restricted by mail.

However, while under the Biden administration, the FDA permanently lifted its restriction on mifepristone that “required providers to dispense the drug in person, allowing it to be delivered by mail,” as ABC News writes.

As of now, women who want the abortion pill must still go through a certified health care provider to get it. Additionally, the FDA’s decision can still be criminalized based on state laws.
